Upadeshasahasri 14.1

14.1 Shankaracharya

svapnasmṛtyorghaṭāderhi rūpābhāsaḥ pradṛśyate | purā nūnaṃ tadākārā dhīrdṛṣṭetyanumīyate ||

In dream and in memory the appearance of a form, such as a pot, is seen. From this it is inferred that the intellect, bearing that form, must surely have been seen before [in waking].

Meaning today and context

What you see in a dream or a memory is not the outside thing itself but the mind's own copy of it. Noticing this loosens the belief that the mind simply is the world it shows.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), opens with the evidence of dream and memory: the forms we see there must have been seen before, as forms taken by the intellect.
