Upadeshasahasri 14.11

14.11 Shankaracharya

ya ātmā neti netīti parāpohena śeṣitaḥ | sa cedbrahmavidātmeṣṭo yatetātaḥ paraṃ katham ||

If the knower of Brahman accepts as the Self that which remains when everything else is excluded by 'not this, not this', how could he still strive beyond it?

Strip away every label you are not, and what remains is not something to reach later. The restless search for 'more self' ends in seeing what is already here.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), argues that once the Self is known by 'not this, not this', there is nothing more to strive for.
