Upadeshasahasri 14.12

14.12 Shankaracharya

aśanāyādyatikrāntaṃ brahmaivāsmi nirantaram | kāryavānsyāṃ kathaṃ cāhaṃ vimṛśedevamañjasā ||

'I am Brahman alone, without interruption, beyond hunger and the other [wants of body and mind]; how could I have anything I must do?' One should reflect directly in this way.

'Beyond hunger' describes the Self, not the body: this is not advice to fast or ignore one's needs, nor to stop working or caring for others. If you are not eating or are withdrawing from life, please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is a meditation on identity: your deepest self is not the hungry, driven part. It can quiet compulsive busyness, while you still eat, work and look after others in the ordinary way.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), gives a reflection for the student to practise.
