jñāturjñeyaḥ paro hyātmā so'vidyākalpitaḥ smṛtaḥ | apoḍhe vidyayā tasminrajjvāṃ sarpa ivādvayaḥ ||
A Self that is an object known by a knower, separate from him, is held to be imagined through ignorance. When that is removed by knowledge, [the Self alone remains,] non-dual, as the rope remains when the snake [is seen to be unreal].
Meaning today and context
You cannot find yourself as one more object, as if looking for your own eyes. When the mistaken picture drops, as fear drops when the 'snake' turns out to be a rope, what remains is simply you.
Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), explains that the Self as an 'object to be known' is a product of ignorance, using the rope-and-snake image.
