ātmā hyātmīya ityeṣa bhāvo'vidyāprakalpitaḥ | ātmaikatve hyasau nāsti bījabhāve kutaḥ phalam ||
This notion, 'the Self' and 'what belongs to the Self', is fashioned by ignorance. In the oneness of the Self it does not exist: when there is no seed, how can there be fruit?
Meaning today and context
Much suffering grows from the seed of 'me and mine'. Seeing that seed clearly is more effective than fighting each of its fruits, jealousy, possessiveness and fear of loss, one by one.
Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), traces 'I' and 'mine' to ignorance, with the image of seed and fruit.
