Upadeshasahasri 14.2

14.2 Shankaracharya

Just as the body seen in a dream wandering about begging for alms is not oneself, so too the [seer] is other than the body seen in waking, because he is its seer.

The body is 'not the Self' as a matter of identity, not of worth: the verse is never a reason to neglect or despise one's body, health or treatment. If you feel cut off from or hostile to your body, please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

In a dream you may see yourself poor, chased or begging, and on waking you know that was not you. The verse asks you to look at your waking body and its condition the same way: you are the one who sees it, not the image seen.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), draws the first lesson: the seer is never the body it sees, in dream or in waking.
