Upadeshasahasri 14.24

14.24 Shankaracharya

yo'haṃkartāramātmānaṃ tathā vettārameva yaḥ | vettyanātmajña evāsau yo'nyathājñaḥ sa ātmavit ||

Whoever knows the Self as the ego-maker, the doer, and likewise as the knower [of objects], is one who does not know the Self. One who knows it otherwise is the knower of the Self.

Thinking of yourself only as 'the one who does and decides' is the very picture to look past. You are the awareness in which doing and deciding appear.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), defines the knower and the non-knower of the Self.
