Upadeshasahasri 14.27

14.27 Shankaracharya

paralokabhayaṃ yasya nāsti mṛtyubhayaṃ tathā | tasyātmajñasya śocyaḥ syuḥ sabrahmendrā apīśvarāḥ ||

For the knower of the Self who has no fear of the next world, nor likewise fear of death, even the lords of the world, Brahmā and Indra among them, would be objects of pity.

This speaks of the Self that does not die; it is not an invitation to welcome death. If you or someone you know is thinking about dying, please reach out now; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Fear of death and of what comes after drives much of life. The verse says that knowing what you are goes deeper than any power or status, and leaves even the mightiest looking anxious by comparison.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), describes the fearlessness of the knower of the Self.
