Upadeshasahasri 14.28

14.28 Shankaracharya

īśvaratvena kiṃ tasya brahmendratvena vā punaḥ | tṛṣṇā cetsarvataśchinnā sarvadainyodbhavāśubhā ||

What is lordship to him, or again being Brahmā or Indra, if craving, the inauspicious source of all wretchedness, has been cut off on every side?

Meaning today and context

Craving, not lack, is what makes us feel poor. When it is cut at the root, promotions, power and status lose their grip, and contentment does not wait on them.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), continues: for one free of craving, even the highest positions mean nothing.
