Upadeshasahasri 14.29

14.29 Shankaracharya

ahamityātmadhīryā ca mametyātmīyadhīrapi | arthaśūnye yadā yasya sa ātmajño bhavettadā ||

When, for someone, the notion 'I' about the self and the notion 'mine' about what belongs to it become empty of any object, then he would be a knower of the Self.

Meaning today and context

The sign of understanding is not talk but how lightly 'I' and 'mine' sit with you. When praise, loss or criticism land on nothing to defend, freedom has begun.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), gives a test for when someone has truly known the Self.
