Upadeshasahasri 14.31

14.31 Shankaracharya

prasanne vimale vyomni prajñānaikarase'dvaye | utpannātmadhiyo brūta kimanyatkāryamiṣyate ||

For one in whom the knowledge of the Self has arisen, as clear, stainless space, a single mass of consciousness, non-dual, tell me: what other duty is still required?

This is about the Self, which does not act; it is not a reason to drop work, family, care for one's body or medical treatment. For a person it means acting without the anxious sense of 'everything depends on me'.

Meaning today and context

Knowledge of the Self is complete in itself; it is not a step toward some further ritual or achievement. This frees spiritual life from endless checklists.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), challenges the ritualist who insists that some duty remains after knowledge.
