Upadeshasahasri 14.32

14.32 Shankaracharya

ātmānaṃ sarvabhūtasthamamitraṃ cātmano'pi yaḥ | paśyannicchatyasau nūnaṃ śītīkartuṃ vibhāvasum ||

One who sees the Self dwelling in all beings and yet [sees] someone as his own enemy surely wants to make fire cold.

Seeing the Self in all does not require staying in an abusive situation or giving up protection or justice; it is about not being consumed by hatred.

Meaning today and context

If you truly see the same Self in everyone, enmity cannot stand. This does not mean ignoring harm done to you, but not letting hatred define how you see a person.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), uses a vivid image for the contradiction of seeing the Self in all and still having enemies.
