prajñāprāṇānukāryātmā chāyevākṣādigocaraḥ | dhyāyatīveti cokto hi śuddho muktaḥ svato hi saḥ ||
The Self, conforming to the intellect and the vital breath like a shadow, appears as the object of the senses and the rest; that is why it is said that 'it meditates, as it were'. In itself it is pure and free.
Meaning today and context
Awareness seems to think and worry along with the mind, as a shadow seems to move with the body. Remembering 'as if' helps you see that you are not stained by what the mind does.
Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), explains Upanishadic phrases (Bṛhadāraṇyaka 4.3.7, 'as if it meditates') that seem to make the Self act.
