Upadeshasahasri 14.47

14.47 Shankaracharya

yathā viśuddhaṃ gaganaṃ nirantaraṃ na sajjate nāpi ca lipyate tathā | samastabhūteṣu sadaiva teṣvayaṃ samaḥ sadātmā hyajaro'maro'bhayaḥ ||

Just as pure space, without any gap, neither clings to anything nor is smeared by anything, so this Self, always present in all beings, is ever the same: unageing, immortal, fearless.

The Self being untouched does not mean harm done to a person does not matter. If you are carrying shame or trauma, please also seek support; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Space holds smoke and dust and is never dirtied by them. Whatever has happened to you, the deepest you is unmarked by it; this can be a quiet support through shame, ageing or fear.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), uses the image of space to describe the untouched Self.
