The impressions of action, both formless and with form, are imagined by deluded sight, through ignorance, upon the Self, outside the nature of seeing. When these are removed by 'not [this]', seeing alone remains.

Old habits and impressions feel like who you are, but they are laid over awareness, not part of it. Setting them aside, one by one, leaves the plain fact of seeing.
Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), describes how the 'not this, not this' method removes what ignorance projects on the Self.
