Upadeshasahasri 14.6

14.6 Shankaracharya

vyañjakatvaṃ tadevāsya rūpādyākāradṛśyatā | draṣṭṛtvaṃ ca dṛśestadvadvyāptiḥ syāddhiya udbhave ||

The intellect's being a revealer is just this: its being seen in the form of colour and other objects. Likewise, the seer-hood of seeing [the Self] is just its pervading the intellect as it arises.

Meaning today and context

Thoughts and perceptions rise and fall; awareness is simply present in each of them without doing anything. You do not have to make yourself aware; you already are.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), distinguishes the intellect's role from that of pure seeing (dṛśi).
