Upadeshasahasri 14.8

14.8 Shankaracharya

karaṇaṃ karma kartā ca kriyā svapne phalaṃ ca dhīḥ | jāgratyevaṃ yato dṛṣṭā draṣṭā tasmāttato'nyathā ||

In a dream the instrument, the object, the agent, the action and the result are all the intellect. Since it is seen to be the same in waking, the seer is therefore other than that.

Meaning today and context

In a dream the doer, the deed and the outcome are all made of mind. Seeing waking life the same way gives some distance from the pressure of 'I did, I failed, I must'.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), uses dream to show that everything in experience belongs to the intellect, not to the seer.
