Upadeshasahasri 14.9

14.9 Shankaracharya

buddhyādīnāmanātmatvaṃ heyopādeyarūpataḥ | hānopādānakartātmā na tyājyo na ca gṛhyate ||

The intellect and the rest are not the Self, because they are things that can be given up or taken up. The Self, which is the one who gives up and takes up, can be neither discarded nor grasped.

Moods, opinions and roles can be picked up and dropped, so they are not who you are. What remains through all of them cannot be lost, which is a quiet answer to the fear of losing oneself.

Shankaracharya, in the fourteenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on dream and memory), states a test for what is not the Self: whatever can be taken up or let go.
