vāsudevo yathāśvatthe svadehe cābravītsamam | tadvadvetti ya ātmānaṃ samaṃ sa brahmavittamaḥ ||
Just as Vāsudeva spoke [of himself] alike in the Aśvattha tree and in his own body, so whoever knows the Self as the same [everywhere] is the best of the knowers of Brahman.
Meaning today and context
The deepest wisdom is seeing yourself no more in your own body than in a tree or another person. It widens the heart beyond 'me and mine'.
Shankaracharya cites Krishna (Vāsudeva) in the Bhagavad Gita (10.26, 'among trees I am the Aśvattha'), who identified himself equally with a tree and with his own body.
