Upadeshasahasri 15.16

15.16 Shankaracharya

dṛśyatvādahamityeṣa nātmadharmo ghaṭādivat | tathānye pratyayā jñeyā doṣāścātmāmalo hyataḥ ||

Because it is seen, this 'I' [-notion] is not an attribute of the Self, like a pot and the like. Other notions and faults should be understood in the same way; hence the Self is stainless.

Meaning today and context

Even the sense of 'I', with its pride, hurt and faults, is something you can observe, so it is not your deepest Self. Your faults are real to work on, but they are not what you are.

Shankaracharya applies the seer-seen argument to the ego: the 'I'-notion itself is seen, so it is not a property of the Self.
