na dṛṣṭirlupyate draṣṭuścakṣurāderyathaiva tu | nahi draṣṭuriti hyuktaṃ tasmāddraṣṭā sadaiva bhuk ||
The seeing of the seer is not lost the way that of the eye and the rest is; for it is said, 'For of the seer [there is no loss of seeing].' Therefore the seer is always the one who experiences.

Eyes may fail and the mind may sleep, but the awareness that knows even sleep and blankness is never switched off. Losing a faculty is not losing yourself.
Shankaracharya cites the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (4.3.23, 'there is no break in the seeing of the seer') to show that the Self's seeing, unlike the eye's, is never lost.
