'Am I the combination of the elements and of the organs? Or am I them taken separately, or some one of them? Who am I?' Thus one should inquire.
Meaning today and context
'Who am I?' is not an idle question but a practice: look at the body, the senses, the mind, and ask honestly whether any of them is you.
Shankaracharya gives the seeker the question to ask himself: which of the body's components, if any, am I?
