Upadeshasahasri 15.2

15.2 Shankaracharya

smarato dṛśyate dṛṣṭaṃ paṭe citramivārpitam | yatra yena ca tau jñeyau sattvakṣetrajñasaṃjñakau ||

In one who remembers, what was seen [before] is seen [again], like a picture painted on a cloth. That in which [it is held] and that by which [it is seen] should be known as the two called 'sattva' (the mind) and 'kṣetrajña' (the knower of the field).

Meaning today and context

Old scenes replay in the mind like pictures on a canvas. The canvas is the mind; you are the one who sees them. A painful memory is something you look at, not something you are.

Shankaracharya analyses memory to show that what is remembered belongs to the mind, not to the Self: the mind is the place where impressions lie, the knower is the one who sees them.
