Upadeshasahasri 15.20

15.20 Shankaracharya

vyastaṃ nāhaṃ samastaṃ vā bhūtamindriyameva vā | jñeyatvātkaraṇatvācca jñātānyo'smādghaṭādivat ||

I am not [the elements and organs] separately or together, neither an element nor a sense organ. Because they are known and are instruments, the knower is other than them, as [one is other than] a pot.

Seeing the body as an instrument is not a reason to neglect it; a good instrument is cared for. If you feel disconnected from your body or in distress, please seek help (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

Your body and senses are instruments you know and use, as you know and use a pot. You are the knower, which is why a failing body or a weak sense does not lessen who you are.

Shankaracharya answers the self-inquiry of the previous verse: the knower is none of the elements or organs, since they are known and are instruments.
