dakṣiṇākṣipradhāneṣu yadā buddhirviceṣṭate | viṣayairhaviṣā dīpta ātmāgniḥ sthūlabhuktadā ||
When the intellect is active in [the senses], chiefly the right eye, kindled by objects as its oblation, then the Self-fire is the enjoyer of the gross [world].
Meaning today and context
In waking life we take in the world through the senses as a fire takes in offerings. Seeing experience this way invites a little reverence and less grabbing.
Continuing the image of the inner fire, Shankaracharya describes the waking state: the Self as Vaiśvānara, the 'eater of the gross', with sense objects as oblations.
