15.38 Shankaracharya

sarvapratyayasākṣī jñaḥ kathaṃ jñeyo mayetyuta | vimṛśyaivaṃ vijānīyājjñātaṃ brahma na veti vā ||

'How can the knower, the witness of all notions, be known by me?' Reflecting in this way, one should understand whether Brahman is known or not.

Meaning today and context

You cannot find the seer as one more object, just as an eye cannot see itself. Seeing this ends the frustrated search for the Self as a special experience.

Shankaracharya raises the puzzle: if the Self is the knower of all, how can it be known? The seeker should reflect on whether Brahman is known or not.
