Upadeshasahasri 15.4

15.4 Shankaracharya

draṣṭuścānyadbhaveddṛśyaṃ dṛśyatvādghaṭavatsadā | dṛśyāddraṣṭāsajātīyo na dhīvatsākṣitānyathā ||

What is seen must always be other than the seer, because it is seen, like a pot. The seer is not of the same kind as the seen; otherwise, like the intellect, it would not be the witness.

Meaning today and context

Anything you can observe, a thought, a feeling, a pain, is by that very fact not you, the observer. Noticing this loosens the grip of moods that seem to define you.

Shankaracharya states the chapter's key argument: whatever is seen must be other than the seer, so the seer cannot be of the same kind as anything it sees.
