Upadeshasahasri 15.45

15.45 Shankaracharya

sattāmātre prakāśasya kartādityādiriṣyate | ghaṭādivyaktito yadvattadvadbodhātmanīṣyatām ||

The sun and the like are held to be 'agents' of light by their mere existence, as in revealing pots and other things. Let it be accepted the same way for the Self, whose nature is awareness.

Meaning today and context

Awareness 'knows' simply by being present, as the sun lights things simply by shining. Knowing is not a strain you have to keep up.

Shankaracharya explains in what sense the sun is called the 'maker' of light, and applies it to the Self.
