Upadeshasahasri 15.46

15.46 Shankaracharya

bilātsarpasya niryāṇe sūryo yadvatprakāśakaḥ | prayatnena vinā tadvajjñātātmā bodharūpataḥ ||

As the sun reveals a snake coming out of its hole, so the Self is a knower without effort, by its nature as awareness.

Meaning today and context

Thoughts and feelings emerge on their own, like a snake from its hole, and awareness simply sees them without having to do anything.

Shankaracharya gives the example of the sun revealing a snake that crawls out of its hole without any effort on the sun's part.
