Upadeshasahasri 15.47

15.47 Shankaracharya

dagdhaivamuṣṇaḥ sattāyāṃ tadvadbodhātmanīṣyatām | satyeva yadupādhau tu jñāte sarpa ivotthite ||

Just as a burner [fire] is hot by its mere existence, so let it be accepted in the Self of awareness: when an adjunct is simply present it is known, like the snake that has come out.

Meaning today and context

Fire does not decide to be hot. Awareness does not decide to know; whatever appears is simply known.

Shankaracharya adds the example of fire: it burns and is hot simply by being there; the Self is a knower in the same way, when an object (adjunct) is present.
