Upadeshasahasri 15.48

15.48 Shankaracharya

jñātāyatno'pi tadvajjñaḥ kartā bhrāmakavadbhavet | svarūpeṇa svayaṃ nātmā jñeyo'jñeyo'thavā tataḥ ||

Likewise the knower, though making no effort, is [called] a knower and an agent, like a magnet. In its own nature, therefore, the Self is neither known nor unknown.

Meaning today and context

A magnet moves iron without lifting a finger. Your presence makes knowing and acting possible without your deepest self being busy or burdened.

Shankaracharya concludes the examples: the Self is called a knower and agent only as a magnet is said to move iron, by mere presence; in itself it is neither known nor unknown.
