Upadeshasahasri 15.49

15.49 Shankaracharya

viditāviditābhyāṃ tadanyadeveti śāsanāt | bandhamokṣādayo bhāvāstadvadātmani kalpitāḥ ||

Because of the teaching 'it is other than both the known and the unknown', states such as bondage and liberation are likewise imagined in the Self.

Even the feeling 'I am bound and must get free' is a story laid over what you are. Seeing this can turn spiritual striving from anxiety into clarity.

Shankaracharya cites the Kena Upanishad (1.4, 'it is other than the known and beyond the unknown') and concludes that bondage and liberation too are only imagined in the Self.
