Upadeshasahasri 15.54

15.54 Shankaracharya

mamāhamityetadapohya sarvato vimuktadehaṃ padamambaropamam | sudṛṣṭaśāstrānumitibhya īritaṃ vimucyate'sminyadi niścito naraḥ ||

Removing 'I' and 'mine' entirely, a person who is firmly certain of that state, free of the body and like the sky, taught by well-examined scripture and reasoning, is liberated.

Dropping 'I and mine' is inner freedom from possessiveness, not advice to abandon family, work or care of the body.

Meaning today and context

Most suffering is knotted around 'I' and 'mine'. When understanding, tested by both scripture and reason, becomes firm conviction, those knots drop and a sky-like openness remains.

The closing verse of chapter 15: Shankaracharya states the fruit of the teaching for one who is firmly convinced of it.
