Upadeshasahasri 15.7

15.7 Shankaracharya

karmasvātmā svatantraścennivṛttau ca tatheṣyatām | adehatve phale'kārye jñāte kuryātkathaṃ kriyāḥ ||

If the Self is free in [undertaking] actions, let it be accepted as equally free in ceasing from them. When one has known that bodilessness is a result that cannot be produced, how could one perform actions [for it]?

This is about the knower's inner freedom from the urge to act for results, not advice to give up work, family duties or responsibilities; for most people it means acting without making the act one's identity.

If you are free to start something, you are free to stop. Once you see that peace is not manufactured by effort, the compulsive chase for it can drop.

Shankaracharya answers the ritualist who says the Self freely chooses to act: then it is equally free to stop. Once liberation is known not to be a product of action, why act for it?
