Upadeshasahasri 16.12

16.12 Shankaracharya

jyotiṣo dyotakatve'pi yadvannātmaprakāśanam | bhede'pyevaṃ samatvājjña ātmānaṃ naiva paśyati ||

Just as light, though it illumines [things], does not illumine itself, so too, even if there were a distinction [within it], the knower, being uniform, does not see itself [as an object].

Meaning today and context

A torch does not need another torch to show that it is on. Awareness is evident by being aware; it does not have to be found or proved by looking at it.

Shankaracharya continues: even granting some distinction within it, the knower cannot see itself, just as light does not light itself up.
