Upadeshasahasri 16.18

16.18 Shankaracharya

jāgratsvapnau tayorbījaṃ suṣuptākhyaṃ tamomayam | anyonyasminnasattvācca nāstītyetattrayaṃ tyajet ||

Waking and dream, and their seed called deep sleep, which is made of darkness: since each is absent in the others, [they are] not [real]. One should let go of this triad.

Meaning today and context

Your waking self, your dream self and the blankness of deep sleep all come and go, yet you are there through all of them. What stays through every state is closer to who you are than any one state.

Shankaracharya applies the teaching to the three states of experience: waking, dream and deep sleep are each absent in the others, so none is the Self.
