Upadeshasahasri 16.25

16.25 Shankaracharya

bāhyākāratvato jñapteḥ smṛtyabhāvaḥ sadā kṣaṇāt | kṣaṇikatvācca saṃskāraṃ naivādhatte kvacittu dhīḥ ||

Because cognition takes the form of an external [object], and because it lasts [only] a moment, there would never be memory; and being momentary, the intellect could never lay down an impression anywhere.

The argument: that we remember at all shows something persists through the changing moments of the mind.

Shankaracharya argues against Buddhist momentariness: if each cognition lasts only an instant, memory becomes impossible.
