Upadeshasahasri 16.40

16.40 Shankaracharya

saṃyogasyāpyanityatvādviyogasya tathaiva ca | gamanāgamane caiva svarūpaṃ tu na hīyate ||

For union is impermanent, and so is separation; so too are going and coming. But one's own nature is never lost.

Grief at a parting is real and deserves care; this verse speaks of what you are, it does not dismiss the pain of losing someone.

Meaning today and context

People and things come into our life and leave it, and every meeting ends in parting. What you are in yourself is not among the things that come and go, and it cannot be taken from you.

Continuing the argument that liberation is not a change of state.
