Upadeshasahasri 16.42

16.42 Shankaracharya

svarūpatvānna sarvasya tyaktuṃ śakyo hyananyataḥ | gṛhītuṃ vā tato nityo'viṣayatvāpṛthaktvataḥ ||

Because it is the very nature of everything, it cannot be given up, since it is not other [than oneself]; nor can it be grasped. Hence it is eternal, because it is not an object and not something separate.

Meaning today and context

You cannot step away from yourself, and you cannot hold yourself up as an object to inspect. Looking for the Self like a thing to be found is the mistake; it is what is doing the looking.

The argument continues: the Self, being the nature of everything, can neither be dropped nor grasped.
