Upadeshasahasri 16.45

16.45 Shankaracharya

guṇānāṃ samabhāvasya bhraṃśo na hyupapadyate | avidyādeḥ prasuptatvānna cānyo heturiṣyate ||

[In the Sāṃkhya view] a disturbance of the equilibrium of the guṇas is not possible, because ignorance and the like are [then] dormant, and no other cause [for the disturbance] is admitted.

Meaning today and context

A technical objection to another school's theory of how the world begins; it reminds us that the text argues its case rather than asking for blind belief.

Shankaracharya turns to refute the Sāṃkhya account of bondage and creation, in which the three guṇas of primal matter (pradhāna) fall out of balance to start the world.
