Upadeshasahasri 16.47

16.47 Shankaracharya

viśeṣo muktabaddhānāṃ tādarthye ca na yujyate | arthārthinośca saṃbandho nārthī jño netaro'pi vā ||

Nor, if [primal matter] exists for the sake [of the person], can there be any difference between the liberated and the bound. Nor can there be a relation of the desired object and the one who desires it: the knower is not one who desires, nor is the other [unconscious matter].

Part of a technical refutation; its point is that the pure knower in us does not itself crave.

Continuing against Sāṃkhya, which says primal matter works for the sake of the conscious person (puruṣa).
