Upadeshasahasri 16.55

16.55 Shankaracharya

sukhādernātmadharmatvamātmanaste'vikārataḥ | bhedādanyasya kasmānna manaso vāviśeṣataḥ ||

Pleasure and the like are not attributes of the Self, since [even] your self is changeless. If [they belonged to it] through difference, why not to someone else['s self]? Or to the mind, since there would be no distinction?

Underneath the debate is a usable point: pleasure and pain are passing states, not the Self; they come and go in the mind.

Shankaracharya concludes against the Vaiśeṣika claim that pleasure and pain belong to the self.
