Upadeshasahasri 16.61

16.61 Shankaracharya

bodhasyātmasvarūpatvānnityaṃ tatropacaryate | aviveko'pyanādyo'yaṃ saṃsāro nānya iṣyate ||

Because awareness is the very nature of the Self, it is always figuratively attributed to that [intellect]. And this non-discrimination, which has no beginning, is itself saṃsāra; nothing else is admitted [as saṃsāra].

Meaning today and context

The trouble is not the world but confusing the knower with the known, the Self with the mind's states. Learning to tell them apart is where relief begins.

Shankaracharya names what saṃsāra really is.
