Upadeshasahasri 16.68

16.68 Shankaracharya

iti praṇunnā dvayavādakalpanā nirātmavādāśca tathā hi yuktitaḥ | vyapetaśaṅkāḥ paravādataḥ sthirā mumukṣavo jñānapathe syurityuta ||

Thus the notions of the dualists and the doctrines that deny a Self have been refuted by reasoning, so that seekers of liberation, freed from doubts raised by other doctrines, may stand firm on the path of knowledge.

This is a philosophical debate of its time between schools; it is not a licence to belittle anyone's faith or tradition.

Meaning today and context

The aim of the argument is not victory but steadiness: a seeker troubled by doubts can find calm when the doubts are honestly answered.

Shankaracharya states the purpose of the chapter's refutations.
