Upadeshasahasri 16.73

16.73 Shankaracharya

parasya dehe na yathābhimānitā parasya tadvatparamārthamīkṣya ca | idaṃ hi vijñānamatīva nirmalaṃ saṃprāpya mukto'tha bhavecca sarvataḥ ||

Just as one has no sense of 'I' in another person's body, in the same way, having seen the highest truth of the Supreme and gained this utterly pure knowledge, one would be free in every respect.

Not identifying with the body is about identity, not neglect or self-contempt: keep caring for your health and follow medical treatment. If you feel disconnected from your body in a distressing way, please seek help; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

You can see someone else's pain or ageing clearly without it shaking your sense of who you are. The verse invites a similar calm toward your own body's changes, while still caring for it well.

Shankaracharya gives an image for how the knower stands toward his own body.
