Upadeshasahasri 17.10

17.10 Shankaracharya

vācyabhedāttu tadbhedaḥ kalpyo vācyo'pi tacchruteḥ | trayaṃ tvetattataḥ proktaṃ rūpaṃ nāma ca karma ca ||

Its division [into many] is imagined because of the differences in what words express; and what is expressed [is itself imagined] from hearing the word. That is why this triad is spoken of: form, name and action.

Much of the world we feel divided by is held together by names and labels. Noticing how much a label shapes what we see is a first step to seeing past it.

Shankaracharya explains how the one Self seems to be many: difference is imagined because of the many things words name. Hence the Upanishad's triad of name, form and action (Bṛhadāraṇyaka 1.6).
