Upadeshasahasri 17.12

17.12 Shankaracharya

dṛṣṭaṃ cāpi yathā rūpaṃ buddheḥ śabdāya kalpate | evametajjagatsarvaṃ bhrāntibuddhivikalpitam ||

… and just as a form, once seen, is made by the intellect into [the object of] a word, in the same way this whole world is constructed by an intellect in error.

'The world is constructed by error' is a philosophical claim about what is ultimately real; it is not a reason to dismiss real problems, people or responsibilities, or to stop caring for body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Seeing that the mind is always building and naming does not make life fake; it means our view of things, including of ourselves, is a construction we can look at rather than be trapped in.

Completing the example begun in 17.11: as a heard sound and a seen form are joined in the mind to word and thing, so the whole world is constructed by an intellect in error.
