Upadeshasahasri 17.13

17.13 Shankaracharya

So it is right that this [world] is unreal. What is pure being and consciousness alone is not imagined. Knowing, too, is that very primal [reality]; but what is known, as something other, is imagined.

Meaning today and context

Objects, moods and circumstances come and go; the knowing in which they appear is not one of them. That knowing is the one thing in your experience that has never been absent.

Shankaracharya draws the conclusion: the constructed world is unreal, while pure being and consciousness is not constructed. Knowing itself is the primal reality; whatever is known as other is imagined.
