Upadeshasahasri 17.16

17.16 Shankaracharya

kalpyopādhibhirevaitadbhinnaṃ jñānamanekadhā | ādhibhedādyathā bhedo maṇerekasya jāyate ||

It is only through imagined limiting adjuncts that this knowing is divided in many ways, just as difference arises in a single crystal from the difference of what is placed near it.

Meaning today and context

A clear crystal next to a red flower looks red, but is not. Anger, fear or sadness can colour your awareness the same way without changing what it is.

Shankaracharya gives the image of a crystal: the one knowing appears manifold only because of imagined limiting adjuncts, as a single clear crystal looks differently coloured by what is placed beside it.
