Upadeshasahasri 17.17

17.17 Shankaracharya

jāgrataśca tathā bhedo jñānasyāsya vikalpitaḥ | buddhisthaṃ vyākarotyarthaṃ bhrāntyā tṛṣṇodbhavakriyaḥ ||

In the same way, for one who is awake, the division of this knowing is imagined. Driven to act by craving, he in error spreads out [as external] the object that is present in the intellect.

Meaning today and context

Craving shapes what we see: when we want something badly, the whole world rearranges itself around it. Seeing that the picture is coloured by wanting is the start of seeing more clearly.

Applying the dream analysis to waking: in waking too the division of knowing is imagined, and the person, driven by actions born of craving, mistakenly projects outward what is present in the intellect.
